Dominique Fils-Aimé returns to the stage to present her new album ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ slated for release in September 2023 on Ensoul Records. After having explored her African-American musical influences in her album trilogy, this new show invites the audience to delve into the roots of her soul. She manifests a strong desire to connect with her higher self, her musicians along with the audience, with the intention of enveloping the listener in a soothing aural embrace.
Fils-Aimé won a Felix in 2019 for Jazz Album of the Year, a JUNO in 2020 for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year and was nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize shortlist in both 2019 and 2021. The mercurial singer-songwriter hailing from Montreal dazzles the listener with her radiant voice and underlying message of empathy.
“Dominique Fils-Aimé’s voice – a defined, sinewy muscle – guides her across a constellation of genres and eras in a robust trilogy dedicated to the history of Black music.”
— Julyssa Lopez - The New Yorker
Dominique Fils-Aimé is a JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter from Montreal. Her ambitious album trilogy conceptualizes the history of African American music. Dominique reflects on the social realities that influenced the genres of blues, jazz and soul.
‘Three Little Words’ is the JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter’s third instalment in her trilogy exploring the emotional palette of African American music and reflecting on the social and historical realities that influenced the genres of blues, jazz and soul.
Three Little Words ends the trilogy in the light, centered around self-healing and recognizing the importance of mental health. When asked about the vision behind her album, Fils-Aimé replies “I was inspired by my strong belief that love is the answer. Soul music to me is letting our soul speak directly to one another. The shortest road between two souls, bringing humans closer together. I know others share my vision for this world, I wanted this album to let them know I stand with them.”
Three Little Words was shortlisted for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize, claimed the #1 spot for best-selling album in Quebec and hit #2 in Canada in the first weeks of its release. It received over four hundred media mentions worldwide and notable press and radio includes The Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star, The New Yorker, CBC, SPIN magazine, KEXP, NPR’s All Things Considered and New Music Friday.
